It was December 2012, and while out to dinner with friends after graduating with their MBA degrees, Kate & Kaitlyn found themselves lamenting the cost of obtaining a quality education. As they drank wine and dined on craft pizza's, they spoke about Kaitlyn's time spent in Haiti, helping women start their own businesses, and Kate's time in the publishing industry. As the night progressed, Kate started to talk about her idea for Educents - a marketplace that would democratize education and bring high quality educational products to the masses. A week later, they both quit their jobs and started Educents.
In January 2013, we started to program the platform, and did an initial pre-launch to gauge interest in the marketplace. By the time we launched in April, 2013, we had over 50,000 members signed up for the platform (before we even had a live product). At that point, we knew we were on to something. After just 2 months of being in business, Educents was profitable. Now, two years after the initial launch, we have saved educators over $15M, have 14 team members, have seen dramatic growth and are backed by some incredible investors.
As with most startups, we're pretty low-key, but we're also incredibly high-performers. Everyone acts like an owner of the business, and we have strong accountability and total transparency. At the end of the day, we like to have fun and build an awesome product. You can expect fun team-building outings and trips, grill-outs every Thursday, and more.
With our new funding, there's tremendous opportunity for you to be part of creating the engineering stack, team, and culture you've always dreamed of. You'll be given resources, tremendous ownership, and a chance to define the problems you work on day to day. Oh, and you'll have great teammates to do it with.
We know that job searches can be laborious and time-consuming, so our philosophy is to interview as quickly as possible, yet still leave time for getting to know each other. We'll start with a 30 minute Skype call, followed by an in-person interview, which will include meeting the team and lots of opportunities for asking questions. We assess ability to learn, cultural fit, demonstrated technical expertise, and willingness to take initiative - more than just "coding questions." After that, we typically make a formal offer very quickly.
We're on the path to making education more affordable for all - are you ready to join us?
