Imgur (pronounced image-er)
Imgur is the easiest way to discover and enjoy the magic of the Internet. It’s where you’ll find the funniest, most informative and inspiring images, memes, GIFs, and visual stories served up in an endless stream of bite-sized fun. Powered by a passionate community of 250M+ people from all around the world, anyone can join to share cool stuff and vote the best to the top. You’ll always find something on Imgur to make you smile and brighten your day.
Here’s us in a nutshell, according to one Imgurian: “The community is vast in all aspects and walks of life. Together we laugh, cringe, get hit by the feels train...it’s also a place where you can go to for advice as well as give it. If you need a laugh, news, advice, or to vent, Imgur can help.”
If you are still reading and want more, we get it. Our origin story is a typical startup fairy tale, but with a twist. In 2009, many image hosts would pull your image or penalize you if your image went viral, as the resulting use of bandwidth was costly. College student Alan Schaaf created Imgur, a basic image host with zero hosting restrictions. 5.5 billion page views and 250 million unique sets of eyeballs (every month) later, here we are. As we wanted to grow internally after being bootstrapped for five years, we raised major financial backing from Andresseen Horowitz, which allowed us to expand our awesome team (BTW, we're hiring!). We're on a plan to be profitable by making money the old-fashioned way - through revenue.
We celebrated our 6th birthday in 2015 by launching mobile apps on Android and iOS, opened a community feedback forum, and won Webby awards for Best Social Media and Best Community Website.
Today, we serve almost a trillion images a year.
Our mission is to lift the world’s spirits for a few moments everyday. Imgur grew because everyone helped shape it. When we say “we,” we mean all the Imgurians (IM-uh-jer-ee-ans) who make this happen and that includes you.
