Network Administrators manage, maintain and keep up to date an organization’s computer network. They must have a knowledge of hardware, software and operating systems such as Windows, Unix and Mac OS X. Some of their tasks might include software installation, upgrades, troubleshooting performance issues and keeping the system secure from hackers, viruses and malware. They might also work with telephone systems, tablets and mobile devices. Because most organizations have computer systems, employment is possible with schools, manufacturers, non-profits and governmental entities.
Also referred to as Computer Systems Administrators, most Network Administrators have a two or four-year degree in a technical field such as Information Technology, Computer Science, Systems Engineering or Network Administration. Professional certifications such as Comp TIA A+, Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert and Cisco CCNP Certification are also highly recognized designations for Network Administrators.
