IT Project Managers work closely with upper management to ensure that information technology projects remain on schedule and within the limits of the specified budget. They measure project performance and manage any changes made to the scope. They may also recruit employees, create milestones, assign tasks to teams and manage the use of resources.
While there is no specific academic path to becoming an IT Project Manager, most employers typically require that candidates for the position have several years of experience supervising projects. Having a degree in computer science or a related field is also considered a strong plus. Successful IT Project Managers are capable of multitasking, thinking critically and supervising teams.
Ranked in the 2017 Global Financial Centres Index, as one of the top 10 competitive financial centers in the world, Chicago is a major business and finance capital. It also has a competitive tech cluster. In 2014, the city had the third-largest science and engineering workforce in the country. Chicago’s balanced economy is made up of strong tech, manufacturing, food processing, publishing and finance sectors. The city also houses the headquarters of several major retailers, including Sears, Walgreens and Ace Hardware.
A huge, vibrant city, Chicago is serviced by an efficient train network, although a large percentage of the population prefers the convenience of driving. In addition, thousands of workers in Downtown Chicago rely on a popular pedway system—a series of overhead bridges and underground tunnels that links over three dozen blocks—to get around during cooler weather.
