Network Operations Center (NOC) Engineers are in high demand throughout the country in many industries. Their primary role is to monitor large computer networks and servers to evaluate performance and spot problems from a central location. They also need to analyze data and perform real-time troubleshooting and incident response on the system in order to keep uptime at a maximum. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects that the job growth will be strong and steady as time wears on.
NOC Engineers use a variety of system tools in order to evaluate software, hardware and environmental concerns. Once issues are identified, NOC Engineers must carefully track and document all aspects of them as well as the resolutions that are being taken. Because of this, they must have strong communication and documentation skills, as well as be excellent analytical thinkers who enjoy problem-solving in environments that can at times be high-pressure. A degree in computer science is a basic requirement, and server experience and working with network hardware is a plus.
