All about JavaScript

What is JavaScript?

JavaScript skills involve using its scripting language, originally implemented in web browsers, but now widely used server-side via the Node.js platform. It supports a runtime system based on numerical, Boolean, and string values, with built-in, first-class support for dictionary and array types.

It is object-oriented requiring no distinction between types of objects and has a prototype-based object model (vs. a class-based object model). This allows for dynamic inheritance where inheritance can vary for individual objects. In JavaScript, functions can be written without special declarative requirements such as type annotations.

What to use JavaScript for

  • Web Development: JavaScript skills are the cornerstone of web development. They’re used for enhancing user interfaces, creating interactive features, and handling client-side logic in web applications.
  • Single-Page Applications (SPAs): JavaScript frameworks and libraries like React, Angular, and Vue.js enable developers to build SPAs, providing a seamless and responsive user experience similar to desktop applications.
  • Server-Side Development: With platforms like Node.js, JavaScript is used for server-side development. This enables developers to build scalable and efficient web servers and backend APIs.
  • Mobile App Development: JavaScript frameworks like React Native and Ionic allow developers to build cross-platform mobile applications using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
  • Game Development: JavaScript can be used for building browser-based games and interactive multimedia experiences, thanks to libraries like Phaser and Three.js that provide powerful game development capabilities.
